Ever since one of my student’s told me about a the little chip she had in her shoe that paired with her Ipod nano to tell
her how fast and how far she was running, I WANTED one. Unfortunately, I had an Ipod touch and it didn’t work with the Nike+ chip. Well be still my heart, one of the recent software upgrades for my Ipod touch (2nd generation) added the ability to use the chip.
OK, so for only $30 , you get the NIke plus sports kit with the chip and a dongle that plugs into an ipod nano (the wireless funtion in the ipod touch and the iphonemake the dongle unecessary. Bonus !!
In the Nike + Ipod Part 2 I will address some of the difficulties people have had with this device. But for the rest of this post, I simply want to rave about how fabulous it is.
I have many character flaws and one of them is that I drift off mentally while running and as a result, I slow down. This wouldn’t be so bad, but my usual brisk pace is … slow. As soon as I got my chip I went running with my daughter and found that when I looked down and saw how slow I was running, I SPED UP !!!! Wahoo !! It is like having a non-judgmental running coach right there with me.
It is great to know how fast and how far every time you run. You can take new routes and don’t have to figure out how far it is. You can run away from home (that came out wrong) and just set out in a direction and the chip tells you when you’ve gone far enough and can turn around.
It might be too much to say this device has changed my life, but it has certainly made some improvements. Read on to Part 2 if you want more Nike + chip info. otherwise skip the next post.
