In the last post I was addressing difficulties people have had. Here is a bit more on that topic.
Accuracy and Calibration
- My last point is that I have not had as much success calibrating walking. I am not sure why this is. Maybe too varied terrain. Again, after the first calibration, I average between what the ipod says and what the actual distance is. It is getting quite a bit better, but still not great
Urban Myths
I thought I had 2 or 3 of these, but I am only remembering one right now.
- This is just a pedometer. Perhaps this is just semantics, but the accelerometer in the chip does a lot more than just record steps. I am fairly sure it detects angles, motions and impact and factors those things in to tell if you are walking or running and how fast. For example, if you stomp your food up and down, it does NOT record that as running.
- Oh yes, another one was that I read in a blog that the timer mechanism ran slow on the ipod touch. At least mine doesn’t.
Glitches
There are a few of these. I will just mention the ones that bug me.
- Reporting ErrorsOnce in a while the software get’s excited and reports a new fastest mile pace. The only problem is that it is wrong (I really di dn’t go that fast). Not sure where that comes from.
- Battery Life: I have only had my chip a few weeks, so I have not had a problem, but there are many reports of extremely poor battery life. You can put the chip to sleep by holding in the button with pointy object. I think it only send info when it is being moved, so if you use your shoes for more than working out and dont’ take out the chip, I am guessing that is a big problem. I use mine only for running, so will wait and see how it goes.
- Non-replaceable battery: This can be over come , here is a link to a technique for replacing the battery. Haven’t done it, so no guarantees. Replacing The Battery in a Nike Plus chip
- Ipod Won’t Sense the Chip: I have also not had this problem, but there are a LOT of posts in the internet about this one. I will duck as I say this, but I wonder if some people didn’t read carefully enough to know that it won’t sense if you are not walking around a bit.
